LABOR DAY BY JOYCE MAYNARD

As much as it sounds like any other love story, it's not. This is a story about discovering lost relationships.

A story told through the eyes of a 13 year old boy who witnesses their lives transform and how.

Living with a single mother with depression is not easy, and especially for a lonely young boy like Henry. Always eating out of cans, not seeing anyone other than a few routine faces. This Labor Day weekend was going to change it all.

The Thursday before the holiday began Adele steps out with her son to the store to stock up on their daily requirements for the next month or so. But walking back in their own home as hostages was not on the list. Frank, a convicted felon who had escaped from prison needed a place to hide out.

Over the next few days they soon became accustomed to his presence around the house. Adele found solace with Frank. This was the happiest Henry had seen his emotionally fragile mother in the longest time, and he didn’t want to see that go again. The smell of fresh food took over their home every day and he didn’t mind that. Frank played baseball with Henry and became a father figure, which Henry had missed. He was glad to have a man around the house. But how long could this go on for?

What if you do find comfort in stranger’s embrace? What if you feel like this person completes your family? But how long could harbouring a fugitive do any good? What happens if he’s caught? Or has to be on the run again? Would you forget those moments and just move on?
