It had been a while since I had read a “chic-lit” book. And I am so glad I stumbled upon this trilogy by Lucy Holliday because this hilarious series was an absolute delight to read! The books were so easy and fun, almost like binging on a series that I couldn’t get enough of. Just like Becky Bloomwood (Shopaholic series), Libby Lomax is trying to make her way through her 20s with her clumsy luck right by her side.
Libby somehow gets roped into becoming an actress by following her sister Cass around for auditions, not a very good one at that. On the first day of her big break, where she finally has a line, she manages to light her costume on fire while talking to the very charming actor, Dillon and gets kicked off the set. The same day she moves into a tiny apartment with a massive sofa. And this new apartment had its first houseguest, Audrey Hepburn, of course. In her classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s black dress with the pearls and hair up with cigarette dangling between her fingers.
Libby’s life seems to be taking a very slow turn. Once she realizes acting is not her calling she starts a business of her own. She has a new man in her life she likes, work seems to be picking up. Her sister Cass proudly starts her own reality show, paving her way to become the next Kardashian. Every extract Cass turned up with her camera crew completely cracked me up.
After an evening gone badly, Libby comes home to fuzzy lump on her couch. Only to find the iconic Marilyn Monroe in a white mink coat wrapped around her. Who seems to have been in her pre-fame time, when she was only dreaming of becoming a famous actor some day. Who thinks Libby is a psychic of sorts when Libby tells her that one-day she is going to work with some legendary actors of her time.
Her brand, Libby Goes to Hollywood is taking off and lands her at a larger swanky new apartment in an elite part of town. This fancy new address calls for a royal guest. When one day Libby finds Grace Kelly sitting on her couch in her wedding dress. Who believes that Libby is a part of her dream and finds herself looking at a magazine with the present day Prince and Princess of Monaco and wondering why the lady on the cover is wearing her jewelry!
The fairytale concept of this book is so refreshing and magical; I loved it! Imagine how fun it would be to be friends with your favorite actors and just getting a drink with them at the end of the day to unwind. When these lovely women turn up, you don’t know if Libby is dreaming or hallucinating, but the conversations feel so real to her, and that mystifies her even more when they all leave a piece of souvenir behind for her. Though, the three idols seem to be enough for this comical joyride, there were so many more fun and warm people in Libby’s life that you will have just have to read to find out about them.
Holliday’s writing has the perfect lightness to it that keeps the story fast paced and a breeze to read. I’ve read the Shopaholic series by Kinsella and the I Heart series by Kelk and these books are the perfect addition to my “chic-lit” collection. Because sometimes all you need is to curl up and get cozy with an enjoyable girly read and a hot cup of cocoa.
